Environment and quality, the focus of Hargs Hamn

Environmental protection, safety at work, and quality of operations are high on the agenda of Swedish ports. As part of Hargs Hamn AB's long-term work on quality, environmental and occupational safety, the port company is now certified according to the international standards ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.

Hargs Hamn AB conducts port and stevedoring operations in Hargshamn, Östhammar Municipality. Activities include handling many different types of goods, with a focus on bulk goods, such as various types of fuel for heating plants in Stockholm and Uppsala.

High ambition
- Port operations involves risks for polluting the environment as well as a risky working environment, while the port's customers expect efficient and high quality services. The Port's Board of Directors therefore decided to raise the level of ambition for the environmental, occupational health and quality work. The certification is proof that the company lived up to our ambitions, says Jacob Spangenberg, Chairman of the Port company and the Mayor of Östhammar.

ISO 9001 is a tool for effective quality management. ISO 14001 aims at an effective and structured environmental work. OHSAS 18001 is a management system for occupational safety. To become ISO and OHSAS certified requires a management system that meets the requirements that are listed in the respective standards. The port's management system has been reviewed and approved by Qvalify AB. Qvalify is accredited by SWEDAC, the state agency for quality and safety.

A part of the core business
- Work on certification and management system has been demanding, but also instructive. We are convinced that a vibrant and profitable harbor is good for the community. An active and long-term environmental health and safety and quality management with a focus on continuous improvement is an important competitive tool. It is part of our core business and part of the foundation for a healthy and sustainable growth of the port and the community we are part of, says Curt Nilsson, CEO of Hargs Hamn AB.

Facts: ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization. ISO is a non-governmental organization with members from the national standardization bodies. OHSAS stands for Occupational Health and Safety Management and is developed by the British Standards Institution.
